Few flowers carry the nostalgic charm of a Carnation. Also known as Clove Pink, this short-lived evergreen perennial is treasured for its beautiful, fringed blooms and distinctive spicy-sweet scent. It forms a tidy mound of striking, slender, blue-green to grey-green leaves that provide year-round textural interest. From there, strong upright stems carry an abundance of double or single flowers with delicately serrated petals in a dazzling array of colours—pink, red, white, yellow, and bi-colours. The blooms appear mainly in spring and summer, filling the air with that signature clove-like fragrance. They also have exceptional vase life, making them the ultimate cut flower.
Native to the Mediterranean, Carnations have adapted beautifully to the Western Cape’s temperate climate. They thrive in full sun—at least 6 hours of direct light—and prefer well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. They’re remarkably tolerant of coastal winds and salt-laden air, making them a resilient choice for seaside gardens. Good air circulation helps prevent disease, and in hotter inland areas, a little afternoon protection is appreciated. They’re hardy to moderate frost, especially once established. Reaching 30–60cm tall, they’re perfect for borders, cottage gardens, rockeries, containers, or the cutting garden.
