In spring to early summer, it produces an abundance of large, terminal clusters of small, tubular white flowers with a delightful, sweet fragrance that fills the air and attracts bees and butterflies. Small, ornamental berries follow, ripening from red to black and attracting birds.

Few plants can claim to be a carbon-capturing superhero, a versatile landscape staple, and a tasty snack all at once. Spekboom, also known as Porkbush or Elephant Bush, is a hardy evergreen succulent shrub or small tree with a dense, rounded canopy of small, fleshy, bright green leaves on distinctive reddish-brown to ruby-red stems. From late spring to summer (October to January), it produces an abundance of small, star-shaped, nectar-rich flowers in clear pink to rosy mauve, a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

If you crave non-stop tropical colour, Hibiscus delivers in spades. Also known as Chinese Hibiscus or Rose of China, this vigorous evergreen shrub has a dense, upright to spreading habit clothed in glossy, dark green, ovate leaves with coarsely toothed margins. From spring through autumn (and often year-round in milder coastal gardens), it produces iconic, spectacular flowers in a dazzling array of colours—fiery reds, hot pinks, sunny yellows, soft oranges, peaches, and pure whites, in both single and double forms. Each short-lived but ever-renewing bloom features a prominent, protruding staminal column, adding exotic, sculptural allure.

Also known as Bee Blossom, this clump-forming herbaceous perennial forms a low, bushy mound of soft, lance-shaped leaves. From late spring through autumn (and often into winter in milder climates), slender, wiry stems rise and arch gracefully, bearing an abundance of delicate, four-petalled flowers in white or soft pink. If you love soft, ever-changing colours, this little succulent will steal your heart. Calico Kitten is a variegated form of our local trailing crassula, grown for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves in a stunning mix of sage green, creamy-white, and rosy-pink margins. Those pink tones intensify to hot pink and even burgundy when the plant is gently stressed by sun or drought, creating a living watercolour effect along slender, wiry reddish-brown stems. In late spring to early summer, tiny star-shaped white to pale pink flowers add a touch of fairy-tale charm.
