There’s a reason spearmint has been a garden favourite for centuries—that sweet, gentle fragrance is simply irresistible. Spearmint, also known as Garden Mint, is a vigorous, spreading herbaceous perennial with upright, square stems clothed in lance-shaped, lightly serrated leaves of soft, bright green. Brush against it, and you’ll release a delightfully sweet, refreshing spearmint scent, milder than peppermint thanks to its lower menthol content. In summer, slender spikes of small, pale purple to white flowers appear, highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Native to Europe and southern temperate Asia, Spearmint has proven wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s temperate climate. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It’s a fully hardy perennial, tolerating light to moderate frost, dying back in winter before resprouting vigorously in spring. Reaching 30–100 cm tall and spreading via underground runners, it’s perfect for containers, kitchen gardens, or as fragrant groundcover in a contained area.
Key Features:
- Bright green leaves release a sweet, refreshing spearmint scent—the classic flavouring for teas, salads, sauces, and mojitos
- A kitchen staple for centuries; also used to ease digestive issues, nausea, and headaches
- Summer spikes of pale purple to white flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators
- Vigorous and fast-growing; provides abundant leaves for harvest throughout the season
Gardening Note: Plant in full sun to partial shade in rich, moist, well-drained soil. To control its vigorous spreading nature via underground runners, it is essential to plant spearmint in a container to prevent it from taking over garden beds. Water regularly, especially during dry summer spells, to keep foliage lush. Pinch back stems regularly to encourage a bushy, compact shape. Cut plants back hard in early summer to promote good top growth. Easily propagated by division in spring or autumn.
