If you want a shrub that brings golden sunshine to the garden year-round, Golden Abelia is a brilliant choice. This charming, semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub has small, oval leaves that emerge with a coppery-pink flush in spring, maturing to a stunning combination of luminous golden-yellow and glossy green. The foliage colour deepens in full sun, and in cooler months, the leaves may take on beautiful bronze or orange tints. From summer through late autumn, it produces an abundance of small, slightly fragrant, tubular flowers in delicate shades of white to pale pink, highly attractive to pollinators.
A hybrid cross, Golden Abelia has proven wonderfully suited to South African gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade—the most brilliant foliage colour and best flowering come in a sunny position. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant. It handles coastal and windy conditions surprisingly well in a slightly sheltered spot and is hardy against cold and frost. Reaching 1–1.5m tall and wide, it’s perfect for borders, informal or formal hedges, mixed perennial plantings, or large containers.
Key Features:
- Leaves emerge golden-yellow and mature to green with yellow margins, often developing bronze tints in winter
- Delicate, slightly fragrant white to pale pink tubular flowers from summer to autumn
- Drought-tolerant, coastal-tolerant, and frost-hardy once established
- Attracts bees and butterflies; ideal for hedges, borders, or containers
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade—more sun encourages richer golden foliage. Water regularly until established; mature plants are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and remove old wood. Responds well to trimming for a formal hedge.
