Watch a patch of Mexican Daisy sway in the breeze, and you’ll see why it’s so beloved. Also known as Seaside Daisy or Fleabane, this vigorous, spreading herbaceous perennial forms a low, sprawling mound of small, narrow, soft green leaves on wiry, branching stems. From spring through autumn (and often into winter in milder gardens), it produces a profusion of small, daisy-like flowers that open white or pale pink and gradually mature to deep pink or rosy purple. The result is a beautiful, multi-toned effect across the plant at any given time, like a soft, drifting cloud of butterflies.
Native to Mexico and Central America, Mexican Daisy has proven wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s temperate climate and is now naturalised in many parts of the region. It thrives in full sun to partial shade—best with at least half a day of sun, though it flowers reasonably well in light shade. It’s remarkably unfussy about soil, growing happily in most well-drained spots, from sandy to loamy to poor, rocky ground. Once established, it’s highly drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, handling coastal and windy conditions with ease and is hardy to moderate frost. Reaching 20–30cm tall and spreading up to 1m wide or more, it’s perfect for edging pathways, cascading over retaining walls, or as charming groundcover.

Gardening Note: Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Water regularly until established; mature plants are highly drought-tolerant. To keep tidy and prolong flowering, shear the entire plant back by about half after the main flowering flush. This plant can self-seed freely; it’s considered naturalised in parts of the Western Cape and can spread. Weed out unwanted seedlings if necessary. Generally pest-free.
