Look closely at those leaves—it’s as if an artist flicked a brush loaded with deep purple ink across each one. The Penwiper Plant, also known as Spotted Kalanchoe, is a unique, upright evergreen succulent that forms a bushy, branching clump of fleshy stems, reaching up to 40 cm tall and wide. The leaves are thick, waxy, oval to paddle-shaped, and a soft, powdery, glaucous green to silvery-blue, dramatically splashed with irregular, maroon to deep purple spots. Those markings become more pronounced in bright light. In spring, a delicate, branching flower stalk rises, bearing clusters of small, starry, four-petalled white flowers, sometimes tinged with pink.
Native to the rocky hillsides and grasslands of Central and West Africa (including Ethiopia, Kenya, and the DRC), this adaptable succulent is wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s climate. It thrives in full sun to bright partial shade—bright light brings out the most intense purple markings. It demands very well-drained, sandy or gritty soil, and once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant. It handles coastal conditions well but is sensitive to severe frost. Its compact, upright habit makes it perfect for rock gardens, succulent borders, or as a striking, conversation-starting specimen in a container on a sunny patio.
