Brush against this creeping mint, and you’ll release one of the most potent fragrances in the herb garden. Pennyroyal, also known as Pudding Grass or Mosquito Plant, is a vigorous, mat-forming evergreen perennial with small, dark green to greyish-green, oval leaves on creeping stems that root as they go, forming a dense, lush, ground-hugging mat. From summer through autumn, charming whorls of small, tubular, pale lilac to mauve flowers rise on upright stems above the foliage, adding delicate colour and attracting bees.
Native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, Pennyroyal has proven wonderfully suited to South African gardens, especially in damp or moist spots. It thrives in full sun to partial shade—a sunny position brings out the strongest fragrance and most compact growth. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and is perfect near ponds, in damp borders, or in containers where moisture needs can be easily met. Once established, it’s reasonably drought-tolerant but looks best with regular water. It handles light frost well. Its vigorous, spreading habit, reaching 10–30cm tall and spreading 50–80cm wide or more, makes it ideal as a “spiller” in containers, a fragrant groundcover in damp areas, or as a natural pest-repelling accent.

Caution: Pennyroyal can be harmful if ingested in large quantities and should never be consumed during pregnancy. The essential oil is highly toxic. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
