For a shrub that looks like it’s glowing from within, Golden Dewdrops is hard to beat. Also known as Sheena’s Gold, this fast-growing, evergreen shrub features dense, bushy growth clothed in small, oval leaves of the most vibrant golden-yellow to lime-green—a colour that intensifies in full sun and provides a year-round cheerful presence. In summer, delicate clusters of tubular, powder-blue to lavender flowers nestle amongst the golden leaves, creating a soft, enchanting contrast. These are followed by decorative, drooping clusters of showy, golden-yellow berries that persist into winter and attract birds.
Native to the tropical Americas (from Mexico to Brazil), Golden Dewdrops has proven wonderfully suited to South African gardens. It thrives in full sun—at least 6 hours of direct light for the most intense foliage colour and best flowering. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. It handles coastal conditions reasonably well, though it may need some protection from strong, salt-laden winds. It’s sensitive to severe frost, so give it a sheltered spot or container culture in colder inland valleys. Reaching 1.5–3m tall and wide (easily maintained smaller with pruning), it’s perfect for borders, hedges, feature planting, or large containers on a sunny patio.
