If you crave non-stop tropical colour, Hibiscus delivers in spades. Also known as Chinese Hibiscus or Rose of China, this vigorous evergreen shrub has a dense, upright to spreading habit clothed in glossy, dark green, ovate leaves with coarsely toothed margins. From spring through autumn (and often year-round in milder coastal gardens), it produces iconic, spectacular flowers in a dazzling array of colours—fiery reds, hot pinks, sunny yellows, soft oranges, peaches, and pure whites, in both single and double forms. Each short-lived but ever-renewing bloom features a prominent, protruding staminal column, adding exotic, sculptural allure.
Native to tropical Asia, this adaptable shrub has become a beloved garden staple across South Africa. In the Western Cape, it thrives in a warm, sheltered position in full sun—at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily for the most abundant blooms. It prefers rich, well-composted, well-drained soil and needs regular watering, especially during dry summer months. It’s sensitive to frost and requires protection in all but the mildest coastal gardens; it also benefits from shelter from strong, salt-laden winds. Reaching 2–3m tall (kept smaller with pruning), it’s perfect for creating a tropical focal point in borders, as a flowering hedge, or in large containers on a sunny patio.
Key Features:
- Large, showy flowers in a breathtaking range of colours from spring through autumn
- Handsome, glossy dark green leaves for year-round structure
- Produces an endless succession of blooms for months of exotic colour
- A magnet for bees and butterflies; ideal for hedges, borders, or containers
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained, compost-enriched soil in full sun, sheltered from strong winds. Water regularly and deeply, especially during dry summer months; do not let soil dry out completely, but avoid waterlogging. Feed regularly with a fertiliser high in potassium to encourage prolific blooming. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage bushy growth. In frost-prone areas, plant against a north-facing wall or grow in a movable container.
