Some plants are grown for their flowers. Dusty Miller is grown for its extraordinary foliage—and what foliage it is. Also known as Silver Ragwort, this soft evergreen subshrub forms a rounded, bushy mound of stunning, deeply lobed or dissected leaves. Each leaf is covered in a dense, woolly white tomentum that gives the entire plant a soft, velvety, luminous silver-grey appearance. It’s like having a piece of moonlight in your garden. In summer, small clusters of unassuming yellow daisy flowers may appear, but many gardeners snip them off to keep the focus squarely on those shimmering leaves.
Native to the rocky coastal cliffs of the Mediterranean, Dusty Miller is wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s temperate climate. It thrives in full sun to part shade—at least some sun is needed for that intense silver colour; too much shade makes the leaves greener and the plant leggy. It demands well-drained soil and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, water-wise, and heat-resistant. It handles coastal winds easily and is hardy to moderate frost. Reaching 30–60cm tall and wide, it’s perfect for borders, edging, rockeries, containers, or mass plantings where its silver foliage makes surrounding flowers truly pop.
Key Features:
- Deeply lobed, velvety, silvery-white leaves for cool, luminous colour
- Acts as the perfect neutral backdrop for brightly coloured blooms
- Exceptionally drought-tolerant and heat-resistant once established
- Ideal for borders, edging, containers, rockeries, and mass plantings
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun for the best silver colour and compact growth. Water regularly until established; mature plants are highly drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering or heavy, wet soil—this can lead to root rot. Trim back in late winter to maintain a tidy shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove flower buds as they appear to keep energy focused on the foliage.
