For a plant that thrives where others fade, Liriope is a true garden workhorse. Also known as Monkey Grass, this clump-forming evergreen perennial features dense tufts of narrow, strap-like, glossy dark green leaves that form neat, fountain-like clumps, providing soft, grassy texture and year-round structure. From late summer through autumn, slender spikes bear small, densely clustered, bell-shaped flowers in attractive shades of violet-purple or lavender. Those charming blooms are followed by pea-sized, ornamental black berries that persist well into winter.
Native to the forests and shady slopes of East Asia, Liriope has proven wonderfully suited to South African gardens. It thrives in full sun to full shade, making it one of the most versatile plants for tricky, low-light areas under trees or on the south side of buildings. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil but adapts to most garden soils, including clay, loam, and sand. Once established, it’s remarkably drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. It handles coastal conditions in a sheltered spot and is hardy to light to moderate frost. Reaching 30–45cm tall and wide, it’s perfect for edging pathways, underplanting trees, mass planting as groundcover, or adding soft contrast in containers and shaded borders.

Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to deep shade. Water regularly until established; mature plants are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional water during dry spells. Cut leaves back to the ground in early spring if they look worn, and they’ll quickly shoot fresh new growth. Divide overcrowded clumps in autumn or spring to maintain vigour.
