In a world of green gardens, this plant dares to be different. Black Mondo, also known as Black Lilyturf or Black Dragon, is a stunning, evergreen perennial treasured for its striking, near-black foliage and its dramatic, ground-covering habit. It forms dense, low-growing tufts of arching, strap-like leaves that mature to a deep, rich purple-black, appearing almost jet black in certain light. That incredible, dark foliage creates a dramatic, textural carpet that provides the ultimate contrast. In summer, short spikes of small, bell-shaped flowers in soft lilac or pinkish-white appear, followed in autumn by glossy, pea-sized, ornamental jet-black berries.
Native to Asia, this tough plant has proven wonderfully suited to Western Cape gardens. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. In hotter inland gardens, afternoon shade or filtered light helps prevent the dark foliage from fading or scorching. It’s surprisingly drought-tolerant once established, handles coastal winds with ease, and is hardy to moderate frost (though a sheltered spot is wise in colder valleys). Reaching only 20–30cm tall and wide, it’s perfect for edging pathways, creating bold swathes in borders, tucking into rockeries, or as a dramatic accent in containers.
Key Features:
- Rare, near-black, grass-like leaves offer unparalleled contrast and year-round interest
- Evergreen leaves, summer flowers, and autumn berries for multi-season appeal
- Water-wise and low-maintenance once established
- Ideal for borders, edging, rockeries, containers, or pairing with silver or gold foliage
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly until established; mature plants are moderately drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional water during dry spells. For the blackest leaves, ensure several hours of sun daily. Remove old foliage in early spring to refresh. Divide clumps every 2–3 years in spring if a larger spread is desired.
