Calico Kitten is a variegated form of our local trailing crassula, grown for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves in a stunning mix of sage green, creamy-white, and rosy-pink margins. Those pink tones intensify to hot pink and even burgundy when the plant is gently stressed by sun or drought, creating a living watercolour effect along slender, wiry reddish-brown stems. In late spring to early summer, tiny star-shaped white to pale pink flowers add a touch of fairy-tale charm.
Native to the Cape Provinces, Calico Kitten feels perfectly at home in Western Cape gardens. It thrives in bright, indirect light to partial sun—morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal, especially inland, since harsh midday rays can scorch the delicate variegated leaves. For those coveted hot pink blushes, give it bright light but protect it from the fiercest sun. It needs very well-drained, gritty soil and, once established, is drought-tolerant and water-wise. It handles coastal winds easily but is sensitive to severe frost, so give it a sheltered spot or move it indoors in colder valleys. With trailing stems reaching 30–60cm, it’s perfect for hanging baskets, containers, or cascading over rocks and banks.
