Imagine the bold, tropical charm of the Drakensberg Mallow, but elevated—quite literally—on a single, clean stem. This standard tree form transforms a naturally bushy shrub into a sophisticated “lollipop” tree that commands attention. It features a strong, straight stem topped with a rounded, perfectly balanced canopy of large, velvety, maple-like leaves that give the plant a dense, lush, and robust appearance. From early summer through autumn, that rounded head becomes smothered in an eye-catching display of deep pink to purple, hibiscus-like flowers—each up to 4cm across with darker veining radiating from the centre—creating a spectacular, long-lasting focal point.
Native to the rocky slopes of the Drakensberg, this plant is surprisingly adaptable to the Western Cape’s climate—even in this trained form. It thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light) and adapts to most well-drained soils. Once established, it’s remarkably drought-tolerant and water-wise, though it looks best with occasional deep watering during dry spells. A sheltered spot is ideal to protect the elegant standard form from strong winds. It can handle moderate frost, but in colder inland valleys, grow it in a container you can move to a protected patio in winter. The canopy reaches 60–80cm wide atop a 90–120cm clear stem, making it perfect for framing an entrance, lining a pathway, or as a striking focal point in a large container.
Key Features:
- Elegant standard form with a single stem and rounded canopy
- Large, velvety, maple-like leaves for a dense, lush appearance
- Masses of deep pink to purple blooms over a long season
- A proud South African native who’s water-wise once established
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in a full sun, sheltered position. Water regularly until established; standards in containers need more frequent watering than those in the ground. To maintain the rounded shape, prune in late winter or early spring, removing any shoots on the main stem and lightly trimming the canopy. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture. Protect from severe frost.
