If you’re after something a little different, Foxtail Fern is a delightful choice. Also known as Cat’s Tail Asparagus or Katstert, this compact evergreen perennial has graceful, upright-to-slightly-arching stems densely clothed in soft, bright green, needle-like leaves. Those stems form cylindrical, foxtail-like plumes that emerge from a central point, creating a neat, bushy clump with wonderful architectural interest. In summer, small, fragrant, white star-shaped flowers appear among the foliage, followed by showy, bright red berries that persist into winter and attract birds.
Native to the Eastern Cape, Foxtail Fern is wonderfully at home in Western Cape gardens. It thrives in light shade or semi-shade, though it can tolerate full sun if kept well-watered. It prefers well-drained, compost-enriched soil and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant thanks to its tuberous roots that store moisture. It handles coastal and windy conditions easily and is hardy to light frost, though it may need protection in colder inland valleys. Reaching 50–70cm tall and wide, it’s perfect for containers, hanging baskets, borders, or as a soft, textural accent beneath trees or alongside water features.
Key Features:
- Dense, cylindrical, bright green stems resembling cat’s tails or foxtails
- A proud South African native that’s water-wise once established
- Showy orange-red berries attract fruit-eating birds
- Ideal for borders, containers, rockeries, or as an indoor specimen
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade—full sun gives the most compact, dense growth. Water regularly until established; mature plants are highly drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional deep watering. Cut back old or frost-damaged fronds at the base in late winter or early spring to rejuvenate the plant.
