For a shrub that puts on a truly showy display in summer, Hebe is hard to resist. Also known as Showy Hebe or Showy-speedwell, this dense, spreading evergreen shrub has a robust, bushy habit clothed in pairs of oval, glossy, rich dark green leaves. In summer, it produces stunning inflorescences: dense, bottlebrush-like spikes up to 8cm long, packed with small flowers in shades of pale pink to intense magenta or deep purple. Each flower has two long protruding stamens, giving the flower heads a distinctive, whiskery look that pollinators love.
Native to New Zealand (where it grows naturally on coastal cliffs), Hebe is wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s temperate climate. It thrives in full sun to partial shade—at least 4–5 hours of direct light for the most abundant flowers. In hotter inland areas, it appreciates good air circulation and protection from fierce afternoon sun. It demands well-drained soil and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant. It excels in coastal gardens, handling strong winds and salt-laden air with ease. It’s frost-hardy to about -5°C, but best suited to frost-free coastal regions as it’s sensitive to severe frost. Reaching 1–2m tall and 1.5–3m wide, it’s perfect for coastal gardens, mixed borders, low hedges, or large containers.
Key Features:
- Dense, whiskery spikes of deep pinkish-red to purple flowers from late spring to summer
- Handsome, oval, glossy dark green leaves for year-round structure
- Drought-tolerant, wind-resistant, and coastal-tolerant once established
- A magnet for butterflies and bees
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade for the best flowering. Water regularly until established; mature plants are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional deep watering during dry spells. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy, compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Protect from severe frost only in the coldest inland valleys.
