Some plants shout for attention. This one whispers—and it’s utterly enchanting. Graceful Spurge, known worldwide as ‘Diamond Frost’, is a tender, evergreen perennial that forms a soft, mounded clump of fine, upright stems clothed in narrow, bright green to greyish-green leaves. From spring right through until the first frosts of winter, it produces a continuous, frothy cloud of tiny, pure white bracts that look like a mist of baby’s breath. The effect is light, airy, and whimsical, adding movement and softness to any planting.
While its exact origins are complex (it’s a cultivated hybrid of tropical species), ‘Diamond Frost’ has proven exceptionally well-suited to South African gardens—some affectionately call it “Cape Snow”. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and, once established, is remarkably heat and drought-tolerant. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and, despite its delicate appearance, requires very little fuss. In the Western Cape, treat it as a summer annual in colder inland valleys, as it’s sensitive to severe frost. Reaching 30–45cm tall and wide, it’s perfect for borders, hanging baskets, mixed containers, or as a stunning filler plant in cottage gardens.
Key Features:
- A profusion of tiny, pure white bracts creates a delicate, cloud-like effect over an exceptionally long season
- Self-cleaning—no deadheading needed for a continuous tidy display
- Exceptionally heat and drought-tolerant once established
- Ideal for containers, hanging baskets, borders, or as soft groundcover
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water regularly until established; mature plants are highly drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. Cut back lightly in late winter or early spring to refresh and encourage dense, bushy new growth. Protect from severe frost in colder inland areas.
