Those cheerful little globes of pink and white look like lollipops scattered across a rocky slope. Sea Thrift, also known as Sea Pink or Thrift, is a clump-forming evergreen perennial that forms a low, dense cushion of narrow, dark green to blue-green leaves, remaining attractive throughout the year. From mid-spring through early summer (and often with sporadic re-blooming into autumn), sturdy, upright stems rise bearing round clusters of small, papery flowers in shades of pink, white, rose-red, or lavender—a playful, lollipop-like effect.
Native to coastal regions, sea cliffs, and alpine grasslands of the Northern Hemisphere, Sea Thrift has proven wonderfully suited to the Western Cape’s temperate climate. It thrives in full sun to light shade—bright light brings the most abundant flowers and a compact, healthy shape. It demands well-drained, even sandy or gritty soil, and once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant. It excels in coastal conditions, tolerating salt spray and windy positions with ease, and is hardy to moderate frost. Reaching only 15–25cm tall and 25–30cm wide, it’s perfect for rockeries, border edging, mass plantings as groundcover, or as a cheerful accent in containers and window boxes.

Gardening Note: Plant in full sun to light shade in very well-drained soil, including sandy, loamy, or gritty types. Will not tolerate waterlogged soils, especially in winter. Water regularly until established; mature plants are drought-tolerant and need little additional water. Deadhead spent flowers by snipping back stalks after flowering to encourage a tidy appearance. Slow grower; propagate by division in early spring every few years to maintain vigour. Generally pest and disease-free.
