For a shrub that adds sophisticated colour without being overpowering, Golden Dewdrops ‘Gold Mine’ is a standout. Also known as Sheena’s Gold, this compact, evergreen shrub features attractive, ovate leaves in rich, deep green, each adorned with a striking, irregular margin of bright golden-yellow to lime-green. The effect is luminous and eye-catching, providing year-round interest and wonderful contrast to darker greens and flowering plants. In summer, delicate clusters of tubular, powder-blue to lavender flowers nestle amongst the variegated leaves, followed by decorative, drooping clusters of showy, golden-yellow berries that persist into winter and attract birds.
Native to the tropical Americas, Golden Dewdrops ‘Gold Mine’ has proven wonderfully suited to South African gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade—morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal for the most vibrant variegation and to prevent leaf scorch. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. It handles coastal conditions reasonably well, though it may need some protection from strong, salt-laden winds. It’s sensitive to severe frost, so give it a sheltered spot or container culture in colder inland valleys. Reaching 1.5–2.5m tall and wide (easily maintained smaller with pruning), it’s perfect for borders, hedges, feature planting, or large containers.
