For instant formal elegance, few plants rival the Indian Laurel Standard Tree. This iconic ‘lollipop’ tree features a strong, straight, pale grey stem topped with a dense, rounded head of medium-sized, leathery, glossy, rich green leaves. The artfully sculpted shape creates a neat, clean-cut silhouette that adds vertical interest and a sense of order and design to any space.
Native to south-east Asia, this adaptable evergreen is a long-standing favourite in South African gardens, particularly prized for its formal shaping. In the Western Cape, it thrives in full sun to partial shade—but full sun is essential to maintain that dense, compact head; shade-grown plants become leggy and lose their desirable symmetry. It prefers well-drained soil and, like all figs, has an extremely vigorous root system. Therefore, it’s best planted in large, deep pots and containers, especially in confined areas or near paving and buildings. It tolerates only very light frost, so it does best in warm, sheltered, frost-free gardens. With stem heights available from 75cm to 250cm, it’s perfect for framing doorways, lining pathways, creating matching pairs, or adding a vertical accent to patios and courtyards.
Key Features:
- A strong, clean stem topped with a perfectly clipped, dense, spherical crown of glossy green leaves
- Handsome, leathery, glossy dark green foliage maintains its neat appearance year-round
- Moderately drought-tolerant once established; handles coastal conditions well
- Ideal for framing doorways, lining driveways, or as a formal accent in containers
Gardening Note: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun for the most compact crown growth. Water regularly until established; mature trees appreciate regular watering during dry spells. Trim new growth frequently to maintain the spherical shape. Stake the stem securely at planting time to keep it straight. Due to its vigorous root system, plant in containers, especially in confined areas. Protect from severe frost in colder inland areas.
